A Prayer to See the Needy
The Needy are all around us. Sometimes they are hard to spot because they hold big smiles and tell funny jokes. Sometimes our hearts have a difficult time recognizing them because they appear to have the ability to "help themselves," yet don't.
When the crowds followed Jesus and they became hungry, he didn't lecture them, telling them they should have "planned better" or "budgeted for the meal." He simply fed them! When the sick came to Him, He didn't explain how they should work harder to contribute more to their health insurance plan or explain how to be "healthier;" he simply healed them! When the poor and needy thronged Him, he didn't look the other way, blaming the government for their predicament. His heart went out to them, He helped them, and He commanded His disciples to do the same.
The following is a prayer for when I am too caught up in my frivolous problems, many of them I have created myself, to ask God for fresh eyes to see what really matters to Him: the Needy.

Let's pray the Scripture.

Open my eyes.

and amen.
